Every adult has an estate and an estate plan. You either designed it yourself (and it may be time for an update!) or your plan is the "default plan" set by law. Do you know what that default plan is?
Your life, legacy, and loved ones are worth protecting regardless of how much or how little you think you have. Without estate planning, your loved ones may be left with the burden and expense of probate to claim your assets (if they're not lost to creditors!)
Estate planning is arguably more important for a single person than for a married couple because there is no one assumed to be in charge of your affairs if you're incapacitated or when you pass. It's also important for mixed/blended families because the "default plan" is based on blood relation and marital status.
Probate is the court-supervised process of administering a person's estate, including appointing an administrator, identifying assets, filing/paying taxes, and distributing property. It's public, time-consuming, and expensive. And it is required even if you have a Will.
Accidents can happen at any time, to anyone. Navigating medical decisions and treatment costs is stressful and heartbreaking. If you can't make decisions for yourself, a Will cannot help your family during such an unfortunate event.
When you leave assets directly to a minor child in your Will, it can trigger another expensive and often complex court process to appoint a guardian/conservator to manage those assets until your child turns 18.
